In the landscapes of life, where uncertainty is often present, having a vision is like having a trusty compass that keeps you on course. It's not a lofty concept; it's a gritty, real-world tool that can transform your journey.

Years ago, after an 18-month hiatus to dismantle all that was not working in my life, I found myself parked at a metaphorical intersection, the crossroads of uncertainty and ambition. I'd taken on a quest to create clarity regarding my purpose, which, I must say, was pretty fantastic, but I hadn't the faintest idea of how to bridge the chasm between aspiration and actualization.

It was then that I stumbled upon a realization—Purpose is the mission, and a vision is road map needed to actualize the purpose out into the world. The power of having a vision is to clear away the nebulous mist that obscures the path. This vision became my anchor, my source of motivation, and my guiding light.

In a previous blog I spoke to Purpose, and I want to take a moment to make a distinction between purpose and vision. They are related concepts, but they serve different roles in your life and can be thought of as distinct elements in the pursuit of a meaningful and fulfilling existence. Here's how they differ:

Purpose:

Purpose is the cornerstone for personal growth, well-being, and fulfillment. It’s the “why” of your life. Purpose adds meaning to your life, aiding decision-making, boosting health, and fostering connections with others. Ultimately, it enriches every aspect of your life, leading you towards a gratifying and fulfilled existence.

Vision:

Your vision is the "what" of your future—an image of your ideal life encompassing various aspects. Unlike your purpose, it's adaptable and evolves over time, serving as a practical roadmap for manifesting your purpose. While purpose is internal, vision is external, focusing on tangible outcomes and specific goals. It provides clear direction and serves as a tool for turning your purpose into concrete results.

Purpose and vision are two distinct yet interconnected elements that play pivotal roles in shaping your life's aspirations. Together, they work harmoniously to empower us to lead a fulfilled, connected life.

Let’s break it down PragMagic™ style.

Clarity:

Clarity is your most powerful tool – leave behind vague dreams and, instead, imagine the precise details of your desired life, silencing the skeptical "how" with unwavering imagination.

Inspiration:

Your vision should inspire you. It should ignite your passion and motivate you.

Alignment:

A genuine vision reflects your deepest values and beliefs. It should resonate with what matters to you.

Future Orientated:

Visualize yourself into the future. Your vision should stretch beyond the boundaries of the present.

Agility:

Life is unpredictable and we must have some agility when life happens. Your vision is not a rigid prescription, it is a guiding map that includes the ability to adapt to life’s detours.

Big Picture:

We're after the whole picture, a comprehensive vision that encompasses all aspects of your life.

Creating a vision is a process. It’s a journey of clarifying your purpose, identifying values, and setting specific goals. It's a bit like assembling the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, gradually revealing the bigger picture. As you gather these insights, the mist begins to lift from the path, and you can begin to move with understanding, intention, and aspirations.
